The Navy tug USS Nokomis is one of the last five vessels still afloat that were present during the attack on Pearl Harbor, Hawaii on December 7, 1941.  The Nokomis rescued sailors, assisted ships, fought fires, as well as dodged falling bombs. During the battle, the Nokomis helped the battleship Nevada get underway and attempt to escape to open sea.  When the Nevada began to sink, Nokomis assisted in beaching her to prevent her from blocking the harbor entrance channel.  Later the Nokomis helped to stabilize and fight fires on the battleship California.  The Nokomis along with other Yard Craft crew and vessels were cited for their heroic actions during the attack.

      Nokomis (YT-142, later YTB-142 & YTM-142), 1940-1975

Nokomis, a 218-ton harbor tug, was built at the Charleston Navy Yard.  Placed in service in March 1940, she was assigned to the Fourteenth Naval District for service at Pearl Harbor.  Reclassified YTB-142 in May 1944 and YTM-142 in February 1962, Nokomis operated in the Pearl Harbor area into the early 1970s. She was stricken from the Naval Vessel Register in May 1973 and sold in April 1975.  The Nokomis was purchased and operated by Crowley Maritime in the San Francisco bay area.  The company terminated their operations in the San Francisco area in the mid 90s and the Nokomis was left in a derelict condition.  The Nokomis was rediscovered in mid 2002.  The Nokomis is now in the care of the Historic Tugboat Education and Restoration Society which is making preparations to open the Nokomis for general visiting in San Francisco.

In addition to the YT-142 Nokomis, there are two other surviving tugboats, the  YT-146 Hoga, a sister ship of the Nokomis and the YT-153.  All three tugboats were present and significantly involved in the events of 7 December 1941 at Pearl Harbor.   Also, Coast Guard Cutter Taney, which was in Honolulu during the attack is now on display in Baltimore, MD.  The Hoga will soon be donated by the Navy to a non-profit organization and be displayed in non-operational condition.  The YC-699 which was also present in the harbor is an open lighter (non-powered barge)  and is now at the former Treasure Island navy base.   The YT-153 is operated daily by Specialty Diving Services of Rhode Is, and now named the Hawk.  When restored the Nokomis will also be operated under her own power.
